Step 8: Static Grouping – Choosing the Items to Combine

Static Grouping allows the builder to specify not just the column to use to group items, but also the specific column value(s). To continue the example used above, you would utilize static grouping if you did not want to display all of the documents with all possible document categories, but only those with a category of "Requirements" or "Specifications."

NOTE: Static Grouping can be used as a filtering mechanism, since items that are not included in the groupings are not displayed.  However, for best performance, it is recommended to use the Filter Builder to ensure the items not being displayed are also filtered out of the original data collection.  That is, the Static Grouping will eliminate items BUT all items will be returned, thereby wasting performance for items that will never be displayed.  Prefiltering via the Filter Builder will save time by ensuring only the displayed items will be returned to the component.

1.     The first section of the Refine Data -> Static Grouping page is the General Settings.  When this section is expanded, the following options are available:

Show results expanded (default = not selected)
Note: Only the first group within the Dynamic Grouping can use this option.  Any groups appearing within the “outside” grouping will be expanded.

Display "Static Group" in group heading (default = not selected)

Display item count (default = not selected)

Hide groups with no results (default = not selected)

Radio buttons to sort the groups in ascending, descending, or as unsorted (default).

2.     If there are no groups in the Refine Data -> Dynamic Grouping page, click on the New Group button.

3.     Within the New Group section is a filter that is similar in operation as the Filter Builder.

Select columns: Choose the column from the list/library to be filtered.

Select operator: Choose the operator for the filter.

Enter Value: Enter the value the grouping is going to be looking for.  For example, the Grouping could be looking for all items where the Status column is Equal to Completed.

You can simply type in the value you want to find, or you can use the [ME] function to group on the currently logged in user.

If the group is being built based on a date column, any of the functions listed in the table provided in the Filtering section of this help can also be used.

4.     If the filter is complex, complete the filter information for the next two rows.

5.     At the bottom of the grouping is a section for formatting the group.

Heading: Enter the text that should appear in the heading for that static grouping.  If the Display "Static Group" in group heading option is enabled in the General Settings, it will automatically be applied when the group header is displayed.

Background: Choose the color for the background of the group heading.

Font: Choose the color for the font used in the group heading.

Formatting: Choose if the heading should be Bold, Italicized, or Underlined.

6.     To add another Static Group, click on the New Group button.

7.     The order the Static Groupings are displayed within the grid is determined by their order of display on the Static Grouping page.  To reorder the groupings, drag them into their appropriate positions.

8.     Once all necessary changes have been made, click on the Apply icon (Title: Apply Icon - Description: Apply Icon) to save the settings.

Note: There is not a “between” filtering function. When creating a Static Grouping based on a Date column where the grouping is between two dates, make use of two of the filtering rows.  One filtering row is for items after a starting date.  The second filtering row is for items before an ending date.
