One way for builders to take advantage of the Tree View’s capabilities is to use it for the administration of Remote Sites. On the Display Wizard’s Sites page, the builder can point the Tree View to the URL of a remote site. When this is done, the Tree View will display the information about the remote SharePoint site as if it was the current site, bringing the navigation and the administration of the remote site to you so you don’t have to go there.
While this use of the Tree View is not recommended for end users, it can be very useful for administrators. Some example uses for this capability include:
• The standard meeting and document workspaces that come with SharePoint are not easy to modify because they do not have menu options. To resolve this, you can use a Tree View at a home site to administer the workspaces remotely.
• As an administrator, you can create an Administration page with many instances of the Tree View to administer remote SharePoint sites instead of having to navigate to each one separately.
• The graphic design of a page or site often does not include navigation. While you are working on it, you can drop the Tree View anywhere on a page, use it to perform the administration you need, and then delete it.
• The Tree View can be configured to be an excellent workplace site map. You can place it in any location and configure it to show the full hierarchy of sites. Or, you can create a multi-column page with multiple Tree Views for different sections.
