Selective vs. Line of Site

Below is additional information on the List Mode types.

Selective

With the Selective list selection method, you choose the exact lists to include in the Data Display. This is made easy: when you choose the Selective option, the Display Wizard returns a list of all the available lists and libraries in the site(s) you selected, and you choose the ones you want to include.

You can select any lists from any sites on the same server that are “visible” to a URL. This can include:

All sites beneath a parent site

A single list in a site located far down in the hierarchy

All lists in a single site collection

Specific lists in multiple site collections

A combination of lists from many levels of many sites

Lists in sites within site collections on different virtual servers (i.e., differing URLs) on the same server

      Any combination of the above

Line of Site

With the Line of Site list selection method, the Display Wizard automatically takes the information in the lists or libraries that match your column and site criteria and returns it in the Data Display. This allows the builder to take a “set it and forget it” attitude, because any new sites and lists created in the future within the specified number of levels will be automatically recognized and rolled up into the display.

When you choose this option, the Display Wizard shows a read-only display of the lists and libraries that currently match your criteria. As additional lists and libraries are added, they will be included automatically.

Because you can select any URL to start with, you can avoid the constraints that typical line of site configurations can cause. The sites you aggregate do not have to be in the same hierarchy as the site where the Data Display is located. They can be in a different level, hierarchy, or site collection, so it does not matter how your system is laid out.  CorasWorks web parts provides the flexibility to lay out your SharePoint environment in any configuration. From anywhere in the system, you can select a SharePoint site, dynamically connect to it, and consolidate information.
