An Overview of Global Links
Global Links are a Workplace Suite feature that simplifies the process of naming and maintaining references to URLs. A global link is simply an entry in a list that is comprised of a name, a URL, and (optionally) a category. The list where global links are stored is determined when the server administrator enables Central Configuration, as described on the next page.
All of the v10+ components support the use of global links in any property that references a URL. When a reference is made to a global link, the component will look up the link to determine the appropriate URL. If the URL ever needs to be updated, it can be done in a single location, rather than having the builder try to remember and access every instance where the URL is referenced.
For example, consider all of the URL references that need to be updated when a solution is moved from development to a production environment. With global links, you can update the URL references in just one place, versus accessing each property in each component that references the development URLs. Another benefit of global links is simplification: rather than having to find, copy, and then paste a long URL, you can just reference a simple global link name.
NOTE 1: In order to utilize global links, Central Configuration must be enabled (click here for details).
NOTE 2: Individuals responsible for using the Global Links Manager to create and maintain global links must have Write access to the list in which global links are stored. Individuals who want to use global links in Display Wizards and application wizards must have at least Read access to this list.
NOTE 3: In order for an individual to have access to the Global Links Manager, they must have at least the following minimum site permissions:
• Manage Permissions
• Create Subsites
• Manage Web Site
NOTE 4: The Global Variable Updater (GVU) was added in v10.4 to provide a simple way to change global links across local and central views, actions, and displays. Click here for more information.
